10 takeaways

Village Project Tutoring taught me…

  • How to from a connection one on one
  • Time management during lessons should be extremely flexible
  • Lesson fidelity is important so that your student isn’t missing any vital intell into the lesson
  • Talking about emotional well being of the student is just as important as the learning material
  • When the student learns that making mistakes is ok, that’s where growth happen

These experiences were significant because they allowed me to learn so much about working with students individually. I am beyond blessed to be a tutor because it has shown me so many skills that I can build off of as I progress to one day be a teacher.

Class takeaways

  • Teaching philosophies are everychanging
  • It is important to not neglect the cultural background of any student
  • Encouraging students to try and fail is what learning is
  • Teaching in different demographic areas will promote differing teaching experiences
  • Meeting students where they are helps to build a safe and inclusive learning environment

The classroom takeaways are important to me because they offered me new insights into the importance of learning how education came to be. Also in understanding that education is a privilege. I also learned that there are various kinds of school systems that aid in all different areas of learning. All of these things contributed to me slowly becoming a teacher and making learning possible for young students.

Village Project Reflection

  • My experience with the Village Project so far has been extremely eye-opening. Tutoring has taught me what it’s like to work one-on-one with a student and form a positive connection.
  • The most impactful element of tutoring this far has been seeing progress before my eyes. Since I am working with my student weekly I can see her growth in literacy and it warms my heart when she recognizes how far she’s come.
  • I am learning time management, how to work with lesson plans, how to address a student’s needs in a productive manner, and how to build a connection. With my experience so far tutoring has been an amazing experience that will aid me along my tutor journey.

How Might Teaching In an Urban Setting be Unique?

  • Students will come from diverse socioeconomic classes
  • Acknowledging cultural differences will help in the classroom development
  • Schools might lack certain resources and materials
  • There might be different language barriers to overcome

My Hopes as a Teacher

  • I aspire to create an accepting classroom environment that promotes diversity among students, strives for self-driven learners, and aids students in all areas of learning as needed.
